This movie starts off with a black male on the phone (being a black male plays a huge role in what this movie’s even about) walking at night down the street.. a car is following him with creepy a** music, and boom he’s kidnapped.
The music is creepy… I had to skip the opening credits.
Then the next scene is another black man shaving … is this movie like race driven? Wtf is this movie about…
The two main characters are Chris (black male played by Daniel Kaluuya) and Rose (white girlfriend played by Allison Williams). The couple starts this movie out by packing for a trip, which we later find out is a trip to their parents… and they’re discussing if her parents know he’s black because he is her first black boyfriend.
[why is there so much emphasis on colour?]
SPOILER ALERT: on the way to her parents in a nice creepy rural area, they hit a deer. Ironically the officer wants Chris’ ID despite his white girlfriend driving… WHY ?!
When they arrive at her parent’s house, Chris is warmly greeted. Her dad gives Chris a tour.
[Side note: Rose’s parents employ black workers, who look at Chris with terror]
Within 10 minutes of being there, Rose’s dad tries to convince Chris to be hypnotized by his wife (who’s a psychiatrist) to help quit smoking.
Fast forward to them eating dinner on arrival day, her brother interrogates Chris wondering why with his frame and genetic makeup, he isn’t interested in street fighting.
[This family is officially obsessed with ‘black’ humans]
[Side note: writing this piece makes me uncomfortable because I’m not entirely sure how to properly refer to other races and ethnicities without offending anyone.. so just know I have no offence here, okay?]
As the movie progresses the black workers start acting really weird. The yard worker runs sprints in the middle of the night, the maid keeps looking at her reflections and they both talk so robotic.
Chris tries to sneak out for a cigarette and when he comes back in, Rose’s mom is sitting in her office.
SPOILER ALERT: Rose’s mom slyly ends up hypnotizing Chris, tells him to sink into the floor and he’s like floating through space?
The next day her parents host some formal bbq, with tons of old people. They all make reference to Chris’ physique and any black celebrity or athlete they know.
-“black is in fashion”
-“I know tiger I love tiger, let me see your swing?”
-“Is it true, is it better ;)” (sex reference)
It’s like they’re all inspecting him. There was only one other black person at the party.. who also spoke robotic.
[side note: someone keeps unplugging Chris’ phone from the charger]
Chris calls his buddy to tell him about the hypnotism and all the other weird sh*t going on with the black references and house workers. His friend says “I’m telling you, that mom has everyone in a trance”
Then the maid randomly appears in the room and apologizes for moving his phone while cleaning and out of nowhere she’s starts crying and historically laughing (it was the creepiest sh*t) and repeatedly says “no no no” and that the family treats her well.
Chris goes back down to the party and takes a photo of the other black man to send to his buddy… this dude literally freezes, his nose bleeds and then he starts charging Chris yelling “GET OUT! GET OUT NOW!”
Rose abruptly takes Chris on a walk. While they’re gone the guests are involved in a silent auction run by Rose’s father, with a photo of Chris as the action piece?
Without ruining this amazing movie… let’s just say that Rose has had more than one black boyfriend, many characters live their life hypnotized and the concept of this movie is something like Freaky Friday (with Lindsay Lohan)
This thriller is amazing. There are so many twists and the plot of the movie is unique; mixing historic and modern concepts of race. WORTH THE WATCH!
