Uhm.. ok this was a revenge thriller for the net generation, and I was completely thrown off with some of the plot twists. Ellen Page (plays Hayley) absolutely destroyed this role, in a good way. And I don’t know who the male character is, but his character name is Jeff. Jeff claims to be a “fashion photographer” and Ellen is a 14-year-old kid.
Was he the victim, was she the victim? You can decide. This film starts out with a chatroom conversation between the two. The initial meetup (which happens right at the start of the film) has some interesting foreshadowing. What stuck with me was when they were flirting conversing and he makes a joke that she’s (Hayley) insane, and she says, “well you know, 4/5 doctors would agree that I’m insane.” Jeff didn’t catch on to the hint but from that point on, I knew there was so much to this movie. He also points out her lie that she was carrying around Romeo in Juliet, which we later find out is a medical book! (stay tuned for that)
They go back to his house where the rest of the movie is filmed, for that reason I found the movie to be a little slow. She instigates alcoholic bevy’s.
SPOILER ALERT: SHE drugs him.
As the movie progresses, and she calls him out for knowledge on the missing girls around the area (AS HE’S TIED UP), she’s preparing for what looks like a surgery?
Ellen Page has some wild rage outbursts throughout the whole movie, and then compliments it with super creepy and monotone small talk? Yup, 4/5 doctors were totally right.
Jeff’s house was also very clean, like serial killer clean. He had hipster natural looking photographs of young girls all over his wall. Hayley loves toying with Jeff that he masturbates to these photos and he obviously gets super uncomfortable. But there’s a special photo on the wall of Jeffs ex-girlfriend, who of course makes an appearance towards the end of the film.
As Jeff’s held hostage, Hayley questions where his pornography is kept. After a rigorous sweep of his house, she finds the hidden gems.
SPOILER ALERT: there are photos of the missing girls in his collection… that he took!
Hayley didn’t take kindly to this, and lays Jeff on a stainless-steel table where she explains that she will be removing his testicles. uhm gross? But even grosser, she sets up his camera equipment, so he can watch if he chooses. She’s composed during the whole procedure, it’s like super insane. AND SHES FREEZES HIM WITH ICE, can you say botched?
[There’s a spoiler alert I really want to throw in about the surgery, but I’m not here to ruin everyones Sunday afternoon, so you’ll have to deep dive on your own]
Hayley proposes an ultimatum to Jeff as she accuses him of killing a young girl. Jeff repeatedly states he didn’t do it, places the blame on someone else. Hayley laughs and says “funny, that’s what so-and-so said before I put him through this same process” (the verbiage is something like that). He also threatens Hayley that he’ll find her, and she reminds him he has no idea who she is, where she’s from and that she’s been priming HIM for weeks.
His mind is blown, then his ex is shows up, and he carries out one of the options proposed in the ultimatum.
Overall, a 14-year-old taking the bull by the horns is cool. I did find the film to be a little slow and the Jeff character to be a little underwhelming. I did like that near the end you learn she’s done this before, to other suspects of the missing girls.Ellen page played her role well, but I found the script could have been executed better.
I could do without the film, but if you have nothing better to watch time to waste, check it out.
